My Cates Family Genealogy

When the Civil War began Thomas Patton Cates enlisted in the Confederate Army at age 44 and in 1862 joined Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Being an older man he begin suffering with a kidney disease and was eventually mustered out. However, William Joshua Cates, his eldest son enlisted and fought with Lee and he was in almost every major battle that Lee's Army fought, including Gettysburg. At the last as they retreated from Richmond, he was among those captured. He was sent to Point Lookout where remained until he took the oath of allegiance and was released about a month after the Civil War was over.

The following information on is the children of Thomas Patton Cates and Isabel Harriet Parker Cates.

1. William Joshua Cates b. 25 Dec 1840 in Mississippi. He died 30 May 1911 in Fort Worth and is buried in Fort Worth. He was a mail carrier, a farmer and in Fort Worth he was cotton weigher and buyer. He married Elizabeth Fidelia Altom 31 October 1868 in Winston County Mississippi. She was b. March 1847 Mississipp and she died 15 March 1929 in Ellis County. She is buried in Myrtle cemetery in Ennis Texas. They had the following children:


        A. Mary b 1869 in Winston County MS; died 1886 in Bristol, Ellis County, Texas.

        B. Zarsko Zelo b 13 Sept 1870 in Winston County, Mississippi. She died August, 1846 in     Abilene, Texas. She married Edward Riley Harlan 3 July 1887 in Bristol, Ellis, Texas.
    He was b. 12 Sept 1862 in Elkton, Kentucky. He died 16 June 1924 in Tulia, Texas and is    buried in Tulia.
They had 6 children, Mary, Leola Fannie, Ethel, Edna Earle, Fidelia (Delia) Cates and William Henry.
(I knew Delia and Wilbur Shaw in Abilene. I was born in Anson and while I was a small child we visited the Shaws and the Harlans several times in Abilene.)

2. John P was b in Winston County, MS 1842 and he froze to death Dec 1859 in Winston County, MS. When he died he was listed as a mail carrier.

3. Margarett Lee b 1 Jan 1845 married William Thomas Cuthbertson 23 Jan 1872 in Texas and she died 17 Oct 1908 in Ennis. We are not sure where she was buried, but probably the Myrtle cemetery in Ennis.

4. Martha (Mattie) Jane b 8 June 1847 in Louisville, Winston, MS. She married Charley H. Hall 25 Feb 1867. She died 17 October 1874 and is buried in Myrtle Cemetery. Her son Thomas (Tommy) Cates Hall is buried along side her.

5. Richard J was b 1 April 1851 in Winston County, MS. He married Louise V. Leverette 5 July 1883 in Ellis County, Texas. He died 27 July 1902 in Bristol, Ellis County, Texas.

6. Sarah W. Cates was born in Winston County, MS in 1853. She died in Bristol, Ellis County, 1877.

7. Mary (Molly) Prudence was born in Winston County, MS 1855. The date of death is presently unknown but she is believed to have died in Ellis County, Texas.

8.Thomas A. Quitman was born in Winston County, MS Sept 1859. He married Elinore or Eleanor Haynes 10 June 1888 in Ellis County Texas.
