My Hall Genealogy

Charles H. Hall

Charles H. Hall (Charley, Charlie, Charly) was born in 1840 in Connecticut to parents born in Connecticut. His father, was Scott Hall, no further information on him at this time. Neither he nor Charly has been found in the 1850 Census. Charles appears first in the 1860 Census in Lauderdale County, Meridan, Mississippi in the 1860 Census. He is living in the house with 2 other men, one from Vermont, one from New York, all three working as a railroad hands.

A look at the Halls in Connecticut in 1850 finds many Halls working for the railroads in varying capacities there. He gave his age as being 21 in the 1860 Census, he should have been 20 years of age, but many railroads would not hire anyone that was not 21 and that might be why he listed himself as being 21 in that Census. In all other Census records, such as 1870 and 1880, he listed himself as a year younger. Also when he enlisted in the CSA he gave the younger age. He enlisted first in the Alamutchie Guards which became Company A of the 13th Mississippi Infantry(select to read the history of the 13th Mississippi Infantry) in 1861 and that was eventually sent to join the Army of Northern Virginia. He was in A company which was reorganized about the time the 13th was sent to Army of Northern Virginia. Men from Winston County, MS were put in Company A, two of which were Thomas Patton Cates and William Joshua Cates his future father-in-law and brother-in-law.

He was captured at the Battle of Gettysburg, but escaped in a few weeks (General Barksdale was killed there) and made his way to Virginia and Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. He was with Lee at Appromattox Court House where he was paroled along with the rest of the Army there. When he went back to Mississippi he went to Louisville and lived close to the Cates family. He married Thomas Patton Cates' daughter, Martha Jane Cates, sister of William Joshua Cates.
